There are some leadership skills that you must not forget to indoctrinate into your team members when training them as potential leaders. The first thing they must understand is the importance of communication. Both upward and downward communication is extremely important and your team members must learn how to integrate clarity in communication. Best way to confirm that communication is understood, is to encourage team members to reiterate what they heard and provide feedback on what was being communicated to ensure everyone is on the same page. Without communication, no goals can be achieved. They also have to learn how to communicate the vision of the organization to others.
You should also teach them the best way to solve problems and make decisions. Problem-solving and decision-making is fundamental and is one of the duties of a leader. They should learn these in their everyday work, and you can help them by giving them autonomy to make decisions on their assignments and solve problems. When you think a team member is ready, you can also task them with making bigger decisions or coming up with problem-solving strategies.
Leaders also have to understand the importance of teamwork. The team cannot function without cooperation and so they have to learn what happens when there is no cooperation. Your team members should be aware of why there is the use of division of labor in a team and why everyone has to work together.
All leaders must have empathy. This is a feeling of understanding towards a person’s feelings. When a person feels empathy, it is easier to lead others because of the deeper understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of their team members as well as whatever it is that they are going through.
Lastly, you ought to teach your team members the way to create successful opportunities for themselves also as the way to empower themselves. You cannot continue to empower them forever, so they should learn how to stand as a leader.
